Why Taking Time Out of Your Business Is the Best Thing You Can Do for ItAvit Media | April 30, 2025

Running a business can feel like a 24/7 commitment. The deadlines, the decisions, the constant demands.. it’s easy to believe that stepping away, even briefly, will cause everything to fall apart. I recently faced this exact fear as I prepared for a cycling holiday in Majorca. The lead up was stressful, the guilt was real… but the outcome was worth every moment!

So… I Picked the Busiest Weekend
As it turned out, the weekend I chose for my break clashed with three big jobs that needed covering in my absence. Typical, right? But here’s where I count myself lucky. At AV IT Media, we’ve built a brilliant team of talented photographers and videographers who stepped in without missing a beat, and they all totally delivered!

And then there’s Jenny, who deserves more than a paragraph. Not only did she stay behind to look after our home and kids single handedly, but she also kept on top of all the jobs we had going, delivered projects, and supported the team throughout. I have a lot to be grateful for, and it’s times like these that make you realise just how crucial a strong support system really is.

The Stress Before the Break
There’s no sugar coating it, organising time off is hard. Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur or leading a team, the idea of stepping back requires planning, delegation, and a lot of trust. I spent days lining up tasks, and ensuring clients were covered. It almost felt like more work than just staying. But I reminded myself that this time is necessary.

The Guilt Factor
Even once I was on that plane, I couldn’t quite relax. What if something goes wrong? What if clients need me? There’s a kind of guilt that creeps in when you’re a business owner taking time for yourself. But here’s the truth businesses are built to support our lives, not the other way around. And that includes space for rest, recharge, and joy.

Majorca The Escape and the Realisation
Cycling through the winding roads of Majorca, with the sun on my back and nothing but the sound of tyres on tarmac, I felt something I hadn’t in a whilefreedom! This trip wasn’t just a physical break, it was a mental reset. And what surprised me most? The world didn’t fall apart without me. In fact, I came back with more clarity, energy, and creativity than I’d had in months.

Why It Matters for Mental Health (and the Business)
Burnout is real. Creativity drains when you’re always in “go” mode. Taking time out isn’t laziness, it’s an investment in yourself and your business. You come back sharper, more focused, and often with a fresh perspective. That break may just be the thing that pushes your next big idea forward.

If you’ve been hesitating to step away, then don’t! Plan it, prepare for it, and then fully TAKE IT! You owe it to yourself and your business to function at your best. And sometimes, the best thing you can do is hop on a bike in Majorca and let your mind unwind.
